Engineering In China - Three Gorges Breaks World Record For Hydropower Generation

China's ‪Three Gorges‬ Power Plant generated 98.8 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity in 2014, beating the world record for ‎hydro power generation set by Brazil's Itaipu hydroelectric plant, according to the China Three Gorges Corporation on Thursday.

Though it has a much smaller installed capacity (14 million kilowatt), Brazil's Itaipu hydroelectric plant has long been the champion of world hydro power generation. It generated 98.6 billion kwh of electricity in 2013.

The record power generation of 98.8 billion kwh literally means saving over 49 million tons of coal consumption and preventing nearly 100 million tons of the carbon dioxide emissions, said the ‪China‬ Three Gorges Corporation.

The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Yangtze River, in Yichang City, central China's Hubei Province.

The new record it sets will make it the world's largest power station in terms of both installed capacity (22.5 million kilowatt) and annual energy generation.
