Malaysia

Singapore

United Kingdom

1. Investment banking

With average starting salaries of £45,000 (compared with a median average of £29,000 on a national level), investment banking remains the top-paid graduate career in 2012. The resurgence in graduate recruitment within the sector has pushed up starting salaries by almost 20% over the last two years. Investment banks often recruit students with proven analytical skills, so scientific degrees including mathematics or physics may serve you just as well as business or economics.

2. Law

Those beginning law careers can expect an average starting salary of £38,000. Leading law firms now pay a quarter more than they did in 2007. You don't have to do an undergraduate law degree – graduate conversion courses are available – but it's not a bad place to start.

=3. Oil and Energy

With starting salaries of around £32,500, the oil and energy sector slots into joint-third place on the pay scale. Geography will give you a well-rounded insight into issues surrounding natural resources, while on the science side degrees in chemical engineering, general engineering and material science are possible options.

3=. Media

Careers in the media industry (such as advertising) can pay starting salaries of around £32,500. However,High Fliers said that most graduate roles at media organisations were commercial posts rather than editorial positions, which pay far less. A degree in communications & media studies should put you on the right track, but creative jobs may well opt for creative arts students, while it doesn't hurt to show off yourliterary talents if you're considering an editorial role.

5. Consulting

Consultants earn average starting salaries of £31,500. This career covers an extraordinarily broad range of subjects, so you might want to choose your degree according to the type of industry you might like to work with as a consultant.

6. Banking and finance

Not cut out for investment banking but still want to follow a career in finance? Other graduate schemes such as retail banking still pay handsome starting salaries averaging £30,000. Developing your aptitude for mathematics is one good place to start here.

7. Armed forces

Graduates joining the armed forces command a £29,500 average starting salary. However, armed force graduate roles have dropped in starting salary more than any other sector since 2007, by a huge 47.9 per cent. The armed forces offer such a wide range of jobs that there's no obvious route in – according to thisArmy brochure, recent graduate officers have held degrees in everything from medicine to zoology.

8. Accounting and professional services

Fancy a career as an accountant? Graduates earn average starting salaries of £29,000, and this figure has been fairly steady throughout the recession, only dropping by 3.1 per cent since 2007. A degree in finance & accounting is the obvious route in to a graduate job here.

9. Consumer goods

The consumer goods sector has seen average annual salaries drop by 4.4 per cent since 2007. Graduates start on around £27,500. Art & design, business and production engineering courses will offer students an advantage in this field, which at 163.8 applicants per place is the most competitive graduate job sector in 2012.

10. Engineering and industrial/Chemical and pharmaceutical

New recruits in both of these in-demand sectors earn average starting salaries of £27,500. Degrees inbiosciences, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, electronic engineering, general engineering, medicine-related courses, pharmacology and physics offer students a path into these wide-ranging fields.
