Environmental Engineering is the integration of sciences and engineering principles to improve the natural environment, to provide healthy water, air, and land for human habitation and for other organisms, and to clean up pollution sites.[citation needed] Environmental engineering can also be described as a branch of applied science and technology that addresses the issue of energy preservation, production asset and control of waste from human and animal activities. Furthermore, it is concerned with finding plausible solutions in the field of public health, such as waterborne diseases, implementing laws which promote adequate sanitation in urban, rural and recreational areas. It involves waste water management and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, environmental sustainability, and public health issues as well as a knowledge of environmental engineering law. It also includes studies on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.
Environmental engineers study the effect of technological advances on the environment. To do so, they conduct studies on hazardous-waste management to evaluate the significance of such hazards, advise on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps. Environmental engineers also design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems as well as address local and worldwide environmental issues such as the effects of acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhausts and industrial sources. 1. South China University of Technology, Guangzhou
Introduction
School of Environment and Energy (SEE) was officially established in 2004 in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, orginally named as School of Environmental Science and Engineering. However, the history of SEE can be dated back to early 1980's. It started to enroll master students in 1984 and doctoral students in 1984. In 2007, the Environmental Engineering discipline was listed as the Key Disciplinary Fields in Guangdong Province.
SEE includes 3 departments and 2 research institute/center, namely Environmental Science Department, Environmental Engineering Department, Municipal Engineering Department, Environmental Science Research Institute, and New Energy Research Center. The school also possesses 2 key laboratories: Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Ecosystem Restoration in Industry Clusters of the Ministry of Education and Key Laboratory of Environmental Protection and Eco-remediation of the Guangdong Regular Higher Education Institutions, with well-equipped facilities valuing 10 million yuan (RMB).
SEE consists of 75 full-duty faculties and staffs: 59 full-duty faculties, 6 experimental technologists, and 10 administrative staffs. Two professors are selected to the China Global Expert Recruitment program. Among the 59 teachers, there are also 22 full professors (18 are doctoral advisors), 28 associate professors. Of all the faculty members, over 85% have doctoral degree and more than 60% have abroad study and working experience. In addition, 15 adjunct professors from world famous universities and research institutes.
In the past few years, ESS has developed a highly professional reseach team with solid disciplinary foundation and strengthened research capability. Currently, ESE has taken up a number of projects, including many national “863” Program, National Natural Science Foundation, Guangdong Province Natural Science Foundation, etc. We have made breakthroughs in research and techniques involving industrial wastewater pollution control, ecosystem restoration, air pollution control, solid waste control and reclamation, and water decontamination. ESE offers strong programs of both undergraduate and graduate study. One of our missions is to prepare students with the knowledge and analytical problem-solving capabilities that will enable them to address technological and societal challenges. Currently, we have approximately 500 undergraduate and 400 graduate students including 80 Ph.D candidates.
