Chinese Factors Lure Thai Students to Study in China

Chinese factors lure Thai students

Growing numbers of Thai students are enrolling in Chinese universities, attracted by China's booming and growing economic, affordable tuition fees, low living expenses and high standard of university education.

They are snapping up courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, in Chinese language, medicine, business and acupuncture. Attractions include the competitive costs and the desire of third-generation Thai-Chinese, who make up most of the students, to rediscover their mother tongue.

The number of Thai students pursing higher education in China continued to rise each year. The statistics released by Chinese Ministry of Education website shown in 2011, there were 14,145 students studied in China. This number increased to 16,675 in 2012 with 18% growth from the preceding year.

Another obvious factor attracted Thai students to study in China is the growing number of Chinese tourists visited Thailand each year. In 2006, Thailand attracted 949,117 Chinese visitors and the total number of Chinese visitors had grown to 2,789,345 in 2012 with almost 200 % growth. In Phuket, the most popular tourist destination in the country, the soaring number of Chinese visitors is estimated to top one million in 2013 and this has prompted and required local Thai people to learn and pick up Chinese to serve the huge arrival of Chinese tourists.

The number of Thai students taking Chinese language either locally or abroad in China has tripled over the past 5 years. And the Thai government is pushing for even more students to take up the language before the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.

For parents, having their kids learn Chinese might mean they could have an edge in an era when China is a rising economic power. It’s a sentiment that has become increasing popular as Chinese is now one of the most popular foreign language options for Thai students.

The rise of of Mandarin language and its popularity in Thailand has led to a shortage of teachers. Currently, around 1 million Thai students are learning Chinese, but there are only 1,200 native speaking teachers. To facilitate elementary schools, high schools, and Universities, The Education Ministry says that the number of teachers needs to be tripled.

In response to the rising demand, the Thai government has laid out plans to bolster the teaching of Mandarin in schools and sending students to study in China is one of the viable option to meet the shortage. Also, to cater to this growing need for learning the Chinese language and culture, 22 Confucius Institutes have been established in Thailand, more than any other country.

In addition to Chinese language, study Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine in China are also a popular choice among Thai students. The English Medium MBBS programs offered by Chinese universities are internationally recognized.

There are 52 approved medical schools in China are public universities under the supervision of the Chinese Government and have been approved to enroll international students. All these universities are listed in the World Health Organization (WHO)'s "Directory of World Medical Schools". This listing means that graduates are eligible to attend national medical screening tests such as USMLE, PLAB, AMC, MCI, PMDC, HPCSA, SCHS, etc.

The Medical Council of Thailand listed 27 medical universities in China as approved and accredited medical institutions and students graduated from these universities are eligible to register with Medical Council of Thailand.

The affordable tuition fees, low and reasonable living expenses in China are also the main attractions for Thai students to study medicine in China. Studying towards an MBBS in China is 70% cheaper than undertaking a similar program in the US or UK. The charges of tutoring in the universities in China are subsidized by the Ministry of Public Health of the Chinese Government. All in all, it is very economical for international students to study in China.

China a country with a population of over 1.3 billion people, and this will provide excellent learning opportunity as there are many clinical cases to be observed thru out the clinical years. The affiliated hospital where students undertake internships must be with the tier of Grade III, Level A, which have the most advanced international-standard medical instruments and also lots of patient beds.

Therefore, the medical education market of China is developing rapidly and becoming one of the world's largest medical education markets not just for This students but also with students from Asia countries in particular India.
